When moving into a new house or apartment, there are what seems like a million new things that fill your mind (and overwhelm you). Upon moving into your new space, you now embody the powerful yet scary role of the artist, your new place acts as your large, blank canvas and you are confronted with the task of creating a masterpiece.

One of the greatest tasks (if not the greatest) is deciding on a color palette for your new home. Even if you have not recently moved into a new place of your own, we all have been in the brightly lit aisles of Lowe’s or Home Depot in front of a complex rainbow of small paint patches, gazing at the complex bunch of colors in front of our eyes.

You may be asking yourself questions like, “How do I even begin to choose a color for my kitchen?” or “What is the difference between egg-shell and cream?” If any of these thoughts have went through your head, you are not alone, I promise you. Picking colors for rooms, whether it be a bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, living room, etc., is no easy task, and it takes numerous trips to Home Depot or Walmart or Lowe’s to find the color that feels right to you.

If you are feel like you have no clue where to start on picking colors for your place, check out my four tips that will help your spot go from drab to fab!

1. Start with the largest/frequently used area of your place: When considering the best colors to make your new place shine, start at the largest and most used room. Do you spend most of your time in the kitchen or the living room? After you evaluate each room and their usage, selecting a palette will be much easier.

For instance, if you spend most of your time in the living room, selecting colors for your kitchen and dining rooms can seamlessly blend with the palette of your living room.

2. Go neutral: If you find yourself overwhelmed by the different hues of greens, blues, pinks, violets, etc., the best option is to go neutral. Neutral colors can be dreary to some and boring to others, however, these color choices can not only be the easiest route to painting a space, but they also give you more freedom to be creative with accents and accessories!

3. Take advantage of paint strips: I started this article with the dreadful experiences of Lowe’s and Home Depot, and while paint strips can be overwhelming, they can also be great helpful aids on how to decide a palette.

According to an opinion contributor, Houzz, of Forbes, “once you have a paint color picked for your first room, one simple way to move on is to choose shades of the same hue for adjacent rooms or walls. You can choose a hue from a nearby paint chip, pick the next color up or down on the same paint chip, or even have the same color mixed at the paint store with white added to make a lighter version.”

4. Consider how you want to feel in each room: It is no surprise that colors can fuel certain feelings within us. For instance, blue is known to be a relaxing color and is typically used in bedrooms to help you fall asleep.

On the other hand, colors like yellow and orange are considered to be energizing colors, which is why they are typically seen in kitchens. If you are having a rough time deciding on a color for a room or rooms in your house, tap into your mind and soul and think about how you will want to feel in the room.

5. Play around with accents/patterns: When in doubt of how to color your place, allow yourself the freedom to be creative! Remember, it is your place so feel free to decorate it and customize it to your liking!

Accent walls are a great way to turn a plain room into a fun and appealing one! Simply evaluate the color palette you would like for the room, and choose two colors that you think will compliment each other! Accent walls typically are only on one of the walls in the room with a neutral, complimentary color on the rest.

Additionally, if you are really stuck on colors and want to have even more fun with painting, use blue painter’s tape to create geometric shapes like squares or triangles and stripes! This can make you feel less pressured to make a decision on a single color or two and instead have a rainbow of colors to spice up your place!

Painting rooms and designing a color palette for your home is definitely not for everyone, and while the process can be overwhelming at points, the best thing you can do is trust your gut! You can’t go wrong with a neutral and if you decide to put funky neon stripes in the living room, right on! Ultimately, the choice is yours and feel free to have fun with it!
